while my sweetie was covering the banana tree with plastic to keep it from freezing overnight, the back door got open and our two inside cats got outside. (they're happier outside, but they live longer inside.) surprisingly, she said that when she came upon them, auggie was hanging back in the doorway, while midnight had turned into the yowling black puffball from hell when confronted with the neighbor's cat. he waited till the other cat backed down and split before running back inside the house. he's our protector-cat as well as our nurse-cat.
