last night

...the li'l stoogeband kicked it at lola's 6th with bastardos de sancho and one fingered fist. the fist sounded tighter 'n' ever -- why are they so self-deprecating when they get _that much_ better every six months or so? -- blasting through their songs with lotsa breakneck tempo changes, josh 'n' will's shouted vox, josh's fancy footwork, and trucker jon's stellar traps. bastardos were crazy good as always, stripping it down to the essence. their set went long (everything started late and they didn't hit until after midnight), which meant we had to cut back drastically from the 16-song set we'd planned.

calling 'em on the fly, we managed to play all three of the newuns we'd practiced, then william bryan massey III joined us to flow some spiel over "funhouse." (if my memory serves me well, setlist was "down on the street," "loose," pere ubu "nonalignment pact," "chinese rocks," "18," "future now" for chad, "raw power," "new rose" right after someone said "play some damned!," "tv eye," pere ubu "30 seconds over tokyo," "funhouse," and "search and destroy." i might have the order wrong.) stage mix was the worst we've ever had at lola's -- i really need to find a new amp solution, but i couldn't hear hembree at all. sounded thin from the front of the house, too. i think they may have stripped away some speakers for the stockyards j'ints.

had a visit from sir steffin, a nice surprise, and of course my sweetie took care of ray-boy's bubbles and cake (with help from uberfan amy who graduates next friday) and shot lotsa pics, which in the fullness of time will be posted on her photo blog. decent-sized crowd seemed to dig it and we were able to replenish the stoogeband's pizza fund. hooray! next: the moon on friday, may 22nd, with transistor tramps and harry has a head like a ping pong ball.

Were you rid of the pesky crud bug by showtime? Hope you're feeling better. Snot can be fun (well, for me at least... TMI) but annoying.
