lou reed and steve hunter

spent some time today viewing the new lou reed berlin dvd and penning a review that'll appear on the i-94 bar in the fullness of time. (to be brief: it's a goodun; there's a cd versh, too, but you really need to see the visual on this julian schnabel-directed extravaganza. it's up there with fz's baby snakes and the flaming lips' u.f.o.'s at the zoo and that's good indeed.)

poking around the bar, i found my pal geoff from philly's review of a show lou played in april 2007 at nyc's highline ballroom that featured highlights from lou's 1991 magic and loss alb, a favorite at my house. the clip below is from the same venue but a different show; you can tell because there was no drummer at the magic and loss show geoff attended.

the gtrist in the wool hat is steve hunter, who played on the original 1973 berlin alb as well as its 2006 revival and subsequent tours. he played on loads of other bob ezrin sessions, too, but if he'd done nothing else besides write the intro to the rock 'n' roll animal version of "sweet jane" (you can hear it when you log onto his website) and play on the one album by mitch ryder's detroit -- including mitch's two-fisted reworking of lou's "rock and roll" -- he'd still have been a big influence on my teenage self back when i was just learning gtr. nice to see steve still rippin' it up in the oh-oh's.
