eh?

do superannuated rockstars continue treading the boards long after it's become detrimental to their health out of 1) greed, 2) vanity, 3) boredom, or 4) all of the above? discuss.

How about superannuated non-rock-stars? I can see myself keeping active playing live music in some form or another until I croak it ... and I can just as easily see myself never reaching any form of stardom whatsoever. In my case, its because I love playing. I'm sure the same is true for at least a few of the oldie moldies. If _you_ could go out on tour and record and play when and whereever you wanted, just for fun, AND you enjoyed it, would you? I sure as heck would.

i love playing too, but i didn't quit touring due to (among other things) serious ear damage 20+ yrs ago. cat has to rest for 3 days in between gigs to mitigate the f-x of volume on his already-damaged cochlea. (remember the '89 tour, where there was a "quiet" side of the stage w/acoustic baffles for pete 'n' his acoustic gtr?) then again, i suppose there are definitely worse things to be addicted to.

i remember when the stones had living colour _and_ guns 'n' roses opening for 'em, wondering "when are they gonna run out of younger, cooler bands that aren't ashamed to be seen with 'em?" when the smashing pumpkins were 2nd billed to them at the local racetrack, i thought about sitting outside w/a clicker after the pumpkins' set finished to see how many o' those younger folks beat it after _their_ heroes played.

when i saw the 'oo in y2k, i had the extremely disconcerting experience of seeing an arenaful of ppl aged 40-55 with a few token 20somethings wandering around wondering "whatthehell are we doing here?!?!?"

these megatours have become the boomer equivalent of going to disneyland or something.

the rekkids these bands release aren't even relevant...nobody buys 'em. there are enough ppl left around for whom it still means something to say "i saw the who / stones / aerosmith / whoevah" that they prolly will keep touring till they croak (the who are 50% there already).

that said, i will say that when i saw the who in '00, not only did they not suck, but relieved of the burden of writing material that _mattered_, townshend appeared to be actually having a good time. and he played better than he ever did when i gaveashit what they did. however, i will never again pay $80 to see anybody's concert. unless they do it in my living room. and play songs i request on the spur of the moment. and bark like a dog if i ask them to.

possible exception: bindle reunion. (fw in-joke.)
