"_now_ i remember his name..."

besides sharing many a funny post, bassist extraordinaire jeremy hull is one of my very favorite musos, even tho my sweetie maintains "he's much too _normal_ and _nice_ to be a musician." i first met j. hull a coupla yrs ago when he was in camino (a kind of afterthought to circle theory and the jim squires band...hello, scott everett, wherever you are). then the last time i went to sxsw, i was skulking down 6th street when i happened to glance in the window of the joint with the kinda coyote ugly vibe where the band plays in the window and said to myself, "oh, look...there's jeremy hull. i'll go inside" and saw collin herring -- who's been known to pen an affecting toon or two and sing it in a voice as distinctive as it's demurely pain-wracked, when he's not playing at "watch the heartbroken boy destroy himself in public," sigh -- and his band tear it up in front of a packed house of jaded music industry folk who seemed to genuinely dig it. when he's not performing / touring / recording with collin, jeremy plays with jason davis, an estimable but obscure blues-rawk-cum-fusion gtrist who lately seems intent on raising his profile with a run of local shows at 6th street grill and elsewhere; a country outfit (the unwound band); a church band (the connection); a tejano band (canta rhythm & brass); and galen jeter and the _original_ dallas jazz orchestra, whose latest cd the big 30 mr. hull just laid on me and it's a stone killer, a potent reminder of the way the massed brass of a stomping big band can hit like a _force of nature_. he covers the whole waterfront, musically-wise, with intelligence, wit, and grace. i've seen him sub for byron gordon with johnny case and not be disgraced even then, and i'm proud to say i once shared the stage at the little wreck room with him for a land-speed-record-tempo version of "chameleon" that left jam-meister lee allen, whose memory for jammers' names is less than sterling, exclaiming, "_now_ i remember his name...fuckin' jeremy!!!"
